John Johnson: Rams teammate Eric Weddle ‘a genius’


The 2018 year proved to be exceptionally successful for the Los Angeles Rams, and John Johnson III is already looking ahead to the way the team can build on that achievement in 2019.
In an appearance on Access on Monday, Johnson touched in 2019, including the addition of Guru ability most notably fellow safety Eric Weddle.
“He’s only a genius. I have not seen anyone like him,” said the 23-year-old Johnson of the savvy veteran. “I haven’t been in the league long but I understand he’s a special one and I’m eager to find out what we can do. Not just how it could make me but I’m eager to see what he and that I can do for this whole defense.”

Weddle, 34, signed with the Rams after being released by the Ravens in March. Throughout his profession, he was the NFL interceptions leader in 2011 — 2011, 2013 and 2014 with the Chargers and 2016-18 together with the Ravens — and has been named to six Pro Bowls.
As a starter in 2018, Johnson started in all 16 games and contributed 119 tackles and 11 pass deflections. When he intercepted Drew Brees in overtime to help push the Rams to Super Bowl LIII and on past the Saints, his biggest highlight of this season came from the NFC Championship Game.
Throughout his TA appearance, Johnson was also requested to reflect how the team has been able to refocus after falling into the New England Patriots 13-3 back in February. A group that is dead set on return to the game in 2020 was indicated by his response.
“I wouldn’t say it is amnesia but I do think we turned the page. This is a team that is new. We dropped men, we obtained free brokers, rookies, undrafted free agents; this is a whole new team,” he said. “We got to begin fresh, we know exactly what it takes to get there, we all know we have to do more to acquire it.
“I think that it’s just turning the page, starting new but it’s definitely a bit more fuel to direct up to this season, for certain.”
